Health department suspends colorectal surgery

by isleofman.com 23rd November 2012

Further details are expected today about the Department of Health's decision to suspend colorectal surgery at Noble's Hospital because of concerns about complications among patients.

The number of patients suffering problems after their operations is described as 'higher than expected' by Medical Director Stephen Upsdell, who said the decision to suspend a service is never taken lightly.

People due to have elective surgery will be referred to an NHS trust in the UK for their treatment.

Emergency colorectal surgery will continue to be performed on the Island.

An investigation of practices and procedures and possibly an external review are now due to begin.
