The Isle of Man Water and Sewerage Authority has completed the rehabilitation of two sewers under Douglas Harbour.
The existing cast iron sewers, which date back to Victorian times, convey all the sewage from the Douglas Head and South Quay area under Douglas inner harbour to North Quay, for onward transmission to the treatment works at Meary Veg.
Undertaken as part of the Authority’s ongoing investment in ‘No-Dig’ sewer rehabilitation, this work has extended the serviceable life of these key assets by at least another fifty years, and has significantly reduced the immediate operational and environmental risk of discharging raw sewage into the inner harbour area, should the existing sewers have blocked or collapsed.
Working in conjunction with the Authority’s framework contractor, Insituform Technologies Ltd, and by utilising the latest sewer rehabilitation techniques, the Authority has achieved its objective in a timely fashion and with minimal disruption to harbour users and the travelling public.
Chairman of the Water and Sewerage Authority, John Houghton MHK, said: “By approaching this project in an innovative fashion, the Authority has delivered what was originally envisaged as a £900,000 capital project, involving excavation beneath the bed of the harbour, to a £150,000 scheme incorporating the latest No-Dig sewer lining technology.”
The Authority would like to take this opportunity to thank adjacent businesses and members of the public for their forbearance throughout the works.
