Views sought on new proposals to combat passive smoking

Manx residents are being urged to give their views on tough new proposals to combat the risks of second-hand smoke, especially among the young.

A consultation's just been launched by the Department of Health seeking public feedback on moves to strengthen current laws on smoking and tobacco.

Measures include a ban on cigarette vending machines and reducing the scale of advertising in shops.

But a proposal to outlaw smoking in vehicles carrying children aged under 16 may be the most controversial.

Public health chiefs say the measure will protect vulnerable youngsters from the known dangers of passive smoking.
