Defence begins in election trial

An Onchan woman accused of three counts of election fraud has taken to the witness box in the Douglas East by election fraud trial.

Kerry Rothwell, 25, is one of two defendants charged with dishonestly obtaining proxy votes in a bid to get celebrity chef Kevin Woodford elected in May 2010.

Miss Rothwell has explained she visited a number of residential homes in the constituency to secure votes after being instructed to by campaign manager Charles Lewin.

She added on each occasion her visit was expected by management at the home.

The prosecution completed its evidence at 11 o'clock this morning, before Miss Rothwell took to the stand.

She will continue her evidence this afternoon.
