Evening Report
The FTSE 100 finished 0.5% lower at 5841.74 in what was a downbeat session Monday.
Concerns about growth in Asia, and China in particular, weighed heavily. Stocks related
to global growth were hurt the most, including autos and mining stocks.
The biggest shareholder in BAE Systems developer of the Harrier jump jet, has "significant
reservations" about a proposed merger with European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co. because
it may harm the company's ability to win U.S. defense contracts.
BP said Monday it has sold the large Texas City refinery, scene of a fatal industrial accident
in 2005, to Marathon Petroleum Corp. (MPC) in a deal worth up to $2.5 billion.
Recruitment company Michael Page International warned that its full year operating profit
will be slightly below current analyst expectations and said it anticipates a challenging
fourth quarter.
ITV PLC, a U.K. broadcaster, announced Monday it bought Finnish television producer Tarinatalo,
a specialist in factual, entertainment, reality and lifestyle programming.
Property group British Land Co PLC (BLND.LN) said Monday that it and Norges Bank Investment
Management, the investment manager for the government pension fund of Norway, have signed a
new joint venture ownership agreement following Norges acquisition of London & Stamford's
50% shareholding in the shopping center Meadowhall.
Google's YouTube is expanding world-wide a program under which it could pay hundreds of
millions of dollars to media companies and celebrities to produce professional-grade content
for the video website.
