Make sure you are fit for the road this Autumn

by isleofman.com 4th October 2012

With the nights drawing in, it is more important than ever that motorists check that their vehicles are fit for the road with all lights, tyres and wipers in full working order.  With this in mind, the Department of Infrastructure’s Road Safety Team and Vehicle Examiners hosted a successful vehicle check event at the Vehicle Test Centre last Friday evening.

The Department of Infrastructure’s Road Safety team invited motorists along to the event so that they could have their vehicles checked over by a Vehicle Examiner and ask questions about how to carry out the checks themselves and rectify problems.

All drivers should remember to use their lights not only during the hours of darkness but also when visibility is seriously reduced.  If you do not know where your rear fog light switch is, please check in your manual or ask a more technically minded friend.

Road Safety Manager Gordon Edwards said: ‘We were delighted to welcome a number of vehicle owners to the vehicle check event last week.   There were some light bulbs that were out of order and were replaced and instruction was given on how to make basic checks that are vital for the coming winter months.

We should all be making regular basic checks on our vehicles and, with the clocks going back at the end of this month, now is the perfect time to make sure your vehicle is in top working order to ensure that you, other road users and pedestrians are as safe as possible this winter.

Finally, I would like to thank Douglas Lifeboat volunteers for running a charity car service wash during the evening and who raised £91.86.’
