Witness 'embarrassed' by proxy vote error

by isleofman.com 3rd October 2012

A Douglas woman has spoken of her ‘embarrassment’ after she voted by proxy in the 2010 Douglas East by-election without realising.

Social worker Cara Justice was giving evidence at the trial of four people accused of manipulating the proxy voting system to get celebrity chef Kevin Woodford elected.

The jury was told Mrs Justice lived in Falcon Street in Douglas with her husband in 2010 when Mr Woodford and another man - one of the defendants - came to the house canvassing.

She told the court she could be off-Island on election day so signed a form she thought was to express an interest in proxy voting.

She said she fully expected government correspondence to follow.

In a later statement to police, Mrs Justice said she was embarrassed when it emerged she had given away her vote and didn’t intend to vote for Mr Woodford anyway.

She admitted she didn’t read properly what was put in front of her but signed it.

The trial resumes at 10 o’clock this morning.
