Beware congestion in the capital!

by isleofman.com 1st October 2012

The bottom of Broadway in Douglas has closed this morning (Monday) and will remain shut for up to six weeks.

It’s so the Mannin Hotel can be demolished.

Historians have raised concerns about the plans to take down the original facade, amid fears Douglas is losing its character, while the redevelopment of the site has been welcomed by the construction industry in the economic downturn.

Director of Highways, Richard Pearson, is urging motorists to give extra time for their journeys with ongoing works in Onchan also causing delays.

Major maintenance work also begins this morning on Cooil Road in Braddan by the Ballacottier roundabout where the road has deteriorated due to carrying a significant number of heavy goods vehicles.

The first phase involves the reconstruction of the Foxdale-bound carriageway and half of the roundabout.

Initially, all routes will be open but controlled by three-way traffic lights.

All businesses will remain open and accessible.

Infrastructure chiefs say the work will be carried out to a higher spec and should last for many years to come.
