by isleofman.com 26th September 2012

The Isle of Man section of BCS The Chartered Institute of IT is pleased to announce its new computer programming competition for Isle of Man students.

Build an Android App: the competition is to build an App for the popular Android operating system used on c. 60% of all smartphones and c. 30% of all tablet computers.

Win £1000: the author of the winning application will receive £1,000. BCS Isle of Man will also assist the authors of the top three entries in publishing their Apps on the Google Play Android Apps shop.

No Prior Knowledge Required: students will not need any prior knowledge of computer programming in order to enter the competition. The competition uses a graphical programming language in which the logic, functions and input/output of a computer program are built up by dragging and dropping symbols. It is as easy as building something in Lego or Meccano.

No Special Equipment or Software: students will not need any special tools, equipment or software to enter the competition. All that is needed is access to a computer with an Internet connection and a web browser.

Free To Enter: there are no fees or costs for entering the competition. Simply download and complete the registration form from the BCS Isle of Man website using the link below.

The Isle of Man International Section of BCS The Chartered Institute for IT is seeking to encourage the development of programming skills by launching a competition for Isle of Man students to build an Android™ based Mobile App. The App can be on any subject as long as it is suitable for use by people aged 11 and over.

The competition is open to all students engaged in secondary or further education, based in the Isle of Man, aged between 11 and 21 on 1st  September 2012. Students may enter individually or as a group but need to be sponsored by a relevant teacher or lecturer within their school or college. A person can only enter once as an individual or part of a Group.

Students will not need a phone or a tablet as links to free development and emulation software, developed by Google and MIT, will be provided. The software is designed to be easy to use and non-technical, but BCS Isle of Man will provide some initial familiarisation sessions for both students and their sponsors before the end of 2012.

The closing date for registration is 20th  December 2012 and Apps will need to be completed and submitted to BCS Isle of Man for judging by the start of the Summer Term on 8th April 2013.
