Scope of Government – Living Within Our Means

One of the authors of the Scope of Government report will be guest speaker at a public meeting organised by the Positive Action Group on Monday (September 24).

The 2006 report suggested many government-run services could be handed over to the private sector and other agencies, but it was rejected by the then Chief Minister who did not support recommendations relating to the scope of government - a position he made clear before he was appointed Chief Minister in December 2006.

The committee which wrote it has since recommended the Manx government needs to drastically reduce the range of its activity in the wake of the VAT revenue loss.

Former MHK for Ayre Edgar Quine is a member of the report team and will give his view on the way forward at Monday's meeting, which starts at 7.30pm.

He says public debate on how a whole host of services are paid for in future is seen as vital:
