Six of the best as champs go top

by isleofman.com 22nd September 2012

St George’s showed exactly why they are Manx football’s finest on Saturday.

The reigning champions thrashed leaders Laxey 6-1 at Glen Road to move to the summit of the Canada Life Premier League.

Callum Morrissey opened the scoring after a goalless first half before Sean Kelly headed an equaliser.

However, once Frank Jones restored the Geordies’ lead it was all one-way traffic.

Sam Caine and Jones again added further goals before Chris Bass junior and a Ciaran McNulty penalty completed the rout to stun the Miners and leapfrog them in the table.

Two goals in as many minutes just before half-time ensured the other big match ended all square.

Steve Riding fired Rushen into a 43rd minute lead only for Steve Priestnal to equalise before half-time to earn St Mary’s a 1-1 draw.

The points were also shared at Douglas Royal where St John’s held Peel in the western derby.

Nicky Sloane had given St John’s a first half lead but Daniel Bell denied them a memorable win.

Corinthians were given a fright by Ramsey before triumphing 3-2 at Ballafletcher.

Blane Slattery hit the winner after the sides shared four goals in first half.

Jamie Stoy (two) was on target for the home side with Ramsey netting through Kris Halsall and John Roberts.

Old Boys saw off Marown 5-1 at Blackberry Lane.

They even led 2-1 at the break without scoring.

After Niall Quayle gave Marown the lead, two own goals turned the match in the home side’s favour.

David Quirk, Chris Clinton and Lee Gartland rounded off the scoring after the interval.

Union Mills are up to sixth after a 2-0 home success over Gymns.

Matthew Caine and Kyle Uren grabbed the goals.
