Emerging Nomads overrun by Vikings

by isleofman.com 22nd September 2012

The big story in the Shimmin Wilson Manx Shield was the comeback game for Western Vikings after a four year absence.

They didn’t disappoint and beat Emerging Nomads 24-20 in their first game since reforming earlier this year.

Hooker Paul Wheland bagged Vikings’ opening try early in the first half and, after Tony Grundy and skipper Mike Sheeley also added tries, they were comfortably ahead 17-6 at half-time.

Nomads’ points came courtesy of two Duncan Miller penalties.

In the second half, Jack Collins pulled one back for Nomads and when Miller converted they were just four adrift at 17-13.

Vikings turned the screw, however, and when Mark Bienvenue crashed in from close range, his try was converted by Mark Venables.

Al Wilkinson’s late try for Nomads was little more than a consolation.

Elsewhere in the Shield, defending champions Southern Nomads thrashed Ramsey B 83-7 at Mooragh Park.

The Landels brothers picked up five tries between them - Gerard with a hat trick and Leon with a brace.

Steve McHugh also weighed in with two tries, skipper Harry Brereton with four, Ian Hargreaves one and Tom Davies one.

Mark Young kicked eight conversions.

Ramsey’s consolation score came from prop Dave Harding and was converted by Garry Vernon.

In the other Shield game, Vagabonds B beat Douglas B 50-12 at Ballafletcher.
