Union boss says new exams have problems

by isleofman.com 20th September 2012

The Branch Secretary for the Association of School and College Leaders says she thinks the proposed new exam, the Ebacc, has problems.

Earlier this week UK Education Secretary Michael Gove announced he wants to replace GCSEs in English, Science and Maths with the English Baccalaureate Certificate.

A main feature of the new proposals is that coursework will be scrapped in favour of a single exam.

There's now a period of uncertainty for the island's teaching staff as they wait for the news on which direction the island will take.

Sue Moore is Branch Secretary for ASCL and headteacher of QEII school in Peel.

She says the moves will bring more challenges for teachers but the really important question which needs to be answered is how we most effectively equip young people with the skills they will need in their adult life.
