Potential Vehicle Licensing Scam

by isleofman.com 19th September 2012

It has been brought to the Department’s attention that there is a potential scam involving cold calling by phone which offers the option to pay for vehicle road tax by direct debit. The caller claims to be from Vehicle Licensing Team and asks for bank account details to set this up.

The Department has no connection to this and requests that you do not disclose bank details over the phone to anyone who may call requesting such information for this or any other purpose.

Mike Ball, Chief Officer of Trading Standards said “Reputable organisations such as Government Departments and financial institutions will NEVER phone you and ask for your Bank details.  This particular scam is one of many where the criminals are trying to get details of you and your bank account so that they can steal your money.  Please be very careful because these criminals are often very plausible and very persuasive”

If you have any concerns or have been approached by this caller on this topic please contact the Vehicle Licensing office at the Department of Infrastructure on 686836 or Post Office Licensing on 698525.
