Freedom of the Borough for Geoff Karran

by isleofman.com 15th September 2012

The man who led the Island to put on an acclaimed Commonwealth Youth Games has joined an elite group with a unique honour to their name.

Geoff Karran MBE has been given the Freedom of the Borough of Douglas, as a tribute to his years of charitable and community work.

Geoff spearheaded the Games organising committee for seven years in the run up to last year's event and helped create Centre 21 in Douglas, a major resource for people with disabilities.

He's chairman of several Manx charities plus a host of sports and community groups.

All that after a successful career as a barrister in Douglas.

At a ceremony in the Council Chamber at Douglas town hall yesterday, he was presented with a specially-commissioned vellum, reflecting his many achievements.

Geoff says the title is a huge honour:

Leader of the council David Christian proposed Geoff Karran for the honour - which has been bestowed on figures ranging from Sir Norman Wisdom to the Bee Gees and Mark Cavendish.

He says the honour salutes a man who has contributed a great deal to society:
