Agriculture Minister Phil Gawne says closing the Island’s Queenie fishery is a far-sighted move suggested by local fishermen.
The beds shut today to give stocks time to recover after around 4,000 tonnes were caught so far this season.
Mr Gawne says the moves have been broadly supported by the Manx fleet which is trying to make the industry sustainable into the future.
And he says the short-term sacrifice is a brave one by those in the industry:
