Fishery to close to protect stocks

by isleofman.com 1st September 2012

Environment, Food and Agriculture Minister Phil Gawne says the Isle of Man Queenie Fishery will be closed from September 4.

He says he’s been contacted by fishermen and the chairman of the Isle of Man Queenie Management Board asking for the closure to be brought in.

He says although catches this summer have been good, the fishing grounds couldn’t withstand unlimited fishing.

Mr Gawne says the closure will safeguard future years’ catches, at the cost of a major short term sacrifice.
