Road racing legend Ryan Farquhar has announced his retirement with immediate effect.
The Northern Irishman, who was due to line up in today's Classic Superbike race at the Manx Grand Prix, made the decision after his uncle Trevor Ferguson was killed in a crash in Wednesday's Supertwin MGP, riding one of Farquhar's machines.
Farquhar had earlier that day claimed his 10th MGP victory in the Senior Classic, while another of his bikes, ridden by Nigel Moore, won the Supertwin race.
Farquhar has told the Belfast Newsletter newspaper he is no longer willing to take the inherent risks involved in road racing after witnessing the devastating effects of the accident on his uncle's wife and three children.
He also paid tribute to the Manx Motor Cycle Club, saying they have been incredibly supportive and couldn't do enough for the family.
