Relatives concerned over EMI closure

The wife of a dementia patient who's among eight residents to be moved from the Southlands EMI unit to Douglas says she's concerned at the effect the change in routine will have on him.

Janice Watterson from Port Erin says she and other relatives were shocked at the news the unit's to close for a month due to a severe staff shortage.

The Department of Social Care says the decision's been taken on safety grounds, and the residents will be better cared for at the purpose-built elderly Mentally Infirm unit in Farmhill.

Mrs Watterson says in her husband David's case, the change of environment will prove deeply unsettling:
