Local delight at Kennaugh gold

by isleofman.com 4th August 2012

The Isle of Man has its first Olympic gold medalist for a century.

Twenty-three-year-old Onchan cyclist Peter Kennaugh, along with Geraint Thomas, Ed Clancy and Steven Burke, won the men's team pursuit at the Olympics yesterday evening.

Great Britain were hot favourites for the final against Australia in a packed velodrome in London and more than lived up to their billing.

They beat the Aussies by 2.5 seconds, setting a new world record of three minutes, 51.659 seconds for the 4km event in the process.

Speaking live on Friday Sport on Manx Radio last night, chairman of Isle of Man Sport Geoff Karran says he was blown away by Kennaugh and co.: (play audio)

Tim also heard from Chief Minister Allan Bell, and Mike Doyle, Rob Holden and Dot Tilbury from the Island's cycling community.
