Benefits need to be less attractive, says minister

The social care minister says in future it should not be possible for unemployed young people to find they're better off living on benefits than working for the minimum wage.

Chris Robertshaw says the value of the minimum wage has not kept pace with rises in benefit levels, and he's concerned that makes staying at home the better option financially for some people.

Speaking on Talking Heads on Manx Radio today, the minister urged people to take part in a major public consultation on how the Island could reduce welfare spending.

Mr Robertshaw wants to ensure those who can pay their way are not automatically entitled to state benefits in future.

He says the current situation is troubling:
