Inspirational story sparks sponsorship

by isleofman.com 31st July 2012

Moore Stephens Isle of Man, leading providers of accounting and wealth management services, will sponsor local business woman Liz Buffini, helping her raise a target of £15,000 for the charity ‘Action Against Cancer’ which fund the development of cures for cancer at Imperial College, Hammersmith Hospital and Manchester Royal Infirmary.

Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 and still undergoing cancer treatment, on 1 July 2012 she completed the Liverpool Triathlon in a time of 2 hours and 22 minutes.

“We’ve raised over £6,600 so far; this will meet the cost of a machine that tests for genes which one of Professor Justin Stebbing's senior researchers can use in the search for a drug to block the cancer gene,” Liz commented, “I’d like to raise more if I can whilst still in this treatment phase which ends on 27 August so I have set myself a new challenge for next month.”

To support Liz, Moore Stephens Isle of Man held bake sales, dress down days, collected personal donations from staff and provided her with training clothing as well as pledging directly.

“I’m sure I can speak for all at the firm when I say how happy we are to support Liz with her fundraising” said Clive Dixon, senior partner of Moore Stephens Isle of Man, “she is an inspiration to us all”.

Liz’s next challenge will be the ‘Escape from Alcatraz’ swim in San Francisco Bay on the 14 August 2012, the distance of the swim, 1.5 miles, is not the most difficult aspect of the challenge, it is the strong currents and frigid water.
