Health official plays down whooping cough cases

The Island’s director of public health says a large rise in the number of whooping cough cases isn’t something for parents to panic about.

Dr Parameswaran Kishore says the illness goes in cycles of four years, and this year there have been nine cases after three years of none at all.

He says the Island’s vaccination programme is continuing as usual, which is the best way to prevent the disease.

Dr Kishore says although the figures look alarming, they’re something the department expected to see:
