DEFA prepares for upland wildfires

Environment Minister Phil Gawne says new initiatives to tackle the problem of upland wildfires are vital to protect invaluable parts of the ecosystem.

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture has been holding joint training sessions with the Island’s Fire Service to discuss how to prevent and deal with fires in remote areas.

Such blazes can destroy habitats and wildlife as well as release large amounts of stored carbon into the atmosphere.

Mr Gawne says it’s important to plan for every contingency:
