Local Barclays employees recognised for outstanding working in the community

Staff at Barclays Wealth and Investment Management in the Isle of Man have been awarded the prestigious Barclays Citizenship Award in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the Manx community.

The Barclays Citizenship Awards are designed to acknowledge the exceptional contribution Barclays employees across the Group make in the areas of community, equality and diversity, financial inclusion and the environment.

Four awards were presented to groups and individuals in the Isle of Man for their work in the community including:

Buljit Jandu – for the work she has been undertaking with Junior Achievement Isle of Man for the past two years. Her work includes arranging school open days, volunteering time as a mentor and encouraging other Barclays employees to support Junior Achievement. Buljit is also the only person in the Isle of Man who has completed the newly launched Community Volunteering Scheme.

Steph Morrell – for organising the Barclays Student of the year event for the past 5 years. The Student of the Year awards are run in conjunction with the Department of Education and Children each year and a panel of judges work with the Island’s five secondary schools to identify students who excel across a number of areas. Steph works throughout the year to coordinate, judge and stage the event.

Parish Walk Committee – this committee was put together to help coordinate and support the 52 walkers taking part in the Parish Walk last year. A number of events were held in the run up to the walk to help with training and motivation and a team of volunteers were on hand to support walkers on the day. In total over £20,000 was raised for local charities by the Barclays walkers.

Commonwealth Youth Games Committee – As one of the partner sponsors of the Isle of Man Commonwealth Youth Games, staff at Barclays were keen to be involved with the event and volunteer their time to ensure it ran smoothly. A team on 130 people volunteered a total of over 1,000 hours throughout the week of the Games from marshalling car parks to liaising with country representatives. Without the help and dedication of the volunteers from all over the Island the Games would not have been the huge success they were.

As part of the award each individual and group was given £1,000 to donate to a charity of their choice which includes Junior Achievement, Crossroads Care and Hospice Isle of Man.

Barclays Isle of Man Managing Director Simon Scott said: ‘Barclays is committed to supporting the local communities in which we operate and I am amazed on a daily basis at how dedicated our colleagues are to their chosen causes. I am delighted that Buljit, Steph and the Parish Walk and Commonwealth Youth Games Committees have been recognised by the Citizenship Awards and I hope that this inspires others to continue their work with local charities and volunteering initiatives.
