Manx Telecom hosts business smartphone event

by isleofman.com 25th July 2012

Some of the Island’s leading IT experts attended a Manx Telecom event earlier this month to demonstrate the benefits of smartphones for business users. Advisers at the company’s store in Strand Street showed customers the four major smartphone operating systems - Apple, Android, Windows and BlackBerry - explaining the pros and cons of each one using handsets linked to HD screens for ease of demonstration.

Mervyn Harvey, mobile Product Manager at Manx Telecom, said:

“We were delighted with the response to our business smartphone event. Manx Telecom’s 98% 3G coverage paired with today’s powerful handsets offer many advantages for business users. They are small and easy to carry but are basically a laptop in your pocket allowing business customers faster communication and providing a secure gateway to company networks at all times. But every business has different needs and requirements for telecoms technology.

With three out of every four mobiles we sell being smartphones this was an ideal opportunity for our business customers to use a range of the latest handsets and discuss with our experts ways in which their business could benefit from using different operating systems. Unsurprisingly, we saw a broad spectrum of the Island’s business community represented including clients from Isle of Man Government, finance, manufacturing, marketing, retail, and the services sector.”

With today's smartphones offering similar mobile capability as a networked computer, guests were also able to discuss the increasing trend of 'Bring Your Own Device' (BYOD) - that means employees using their own mobile for business related tasks such as email, calendars and accessing server content over a wifi connection or 3G mobile network.

Whilst this may present data security concerns for some business owners or IT departments, Manx Telecom's experts explained how it is possible to configure employee access to each exact requirement, ensuring security, accessibility and increased productivity.
