Road Safety Summer Anti Drink-Drive Campaign

by isleofman.com 23rd July 2012

The Department of Infrastructure’s Road Safety Unit has launched a new campaign for the Summer to remind motorists to not drink and drive.

Each year an anti-drink drive campaign is run over the Christmas period but Summer can also provide temptation for drink drivers with parties and barbeques taking place during the light evenings.  With the schools breaking up for the summer holidays last week and more people taking leave from work, people will often have a few drinks.  If you do, please leave your car at home!

Road Safety Manager Gordon Edwards said: ‘The long, light summer nights often mean more socialising, we are asking that when you are driving you stick to soft drinks or arrange for a taxi or public transport to get home or stay at friend’s house if you are drinking.’

The campaign was launched last week with members of the Isle of Man Constabulary, Road Safety Team and Fire and Rescue Service enjoying some non-alcoholic cocktails at a summer barbeque.

Detective Inspector Iain MacMillan from the Isle of Man Constabulary said: ‘It is important for people to remember that when they are attending parties and barbeques at friends’ houses it is all too easy to lose track of how much they’ve had to drink. The only way to make sure that you don’t drink and drive is to drink soft drinks, or arrange other transportation. It only takes a moment for a serious accident to unfold and a fun summer evening turn into a tragedy.’
