Around a hundred people attended an auction of jewellery belonging to former millionaire Trevor Baines at the Empress last night (Fri)
89 lots belonging to Baines and his wife Wendy went under the hammer at the Empress Hotel in Douglas in an auction to help pay off the Baines’ debt to the Attorney General.
Baines was jailed three years ago for money-laundering, while his wife admitted false accounting.
The lots went for prices ranging from just a few pounds to several thousand for a white gold aquamarine and diamond ring, where there was one telephone bidder.
But dealer Alan Holloway, who flew in specially for the auction and bought a large number of items including the ring, says a lot of it would just be melted down for scrap
