Bargain could be 'potential death trap'

by isleofman.com 17th July 2012

There is a warning from the Isle of Man Office of Fair Trading about a potential 'death trap' being passed off as a bargain.

There is concern that 'memory foam' mattresses which are being sold through the classifieds in local papers do not meet safety standards and are in fact highly flammable.

Two examples were bought by enforcement officers and samples taken from the mattresses were submitted for analysis.

The filling material used in one of the mattresses failed an 'ignitability' test.

The product appears to be very heavily discounted, and the label on the mattresses state that they comply with “Current Fire Safety Regulations” but the truth of that is in doubt.

Anyone who has bought such a mattress should contact the OFT on 686500.
