Firemen in world record attempt

by isleofman.com 13th July 2012

A team of 10 firemen on the Island will attempt to break a Guinness World record this weekend.

They will be climbing up a scaffolding tower in Regent Street, Douglas, for 24 hours to try to break the current world record set by the Professional Firefighters of New Zealand in 2005, who climbed a distance of 68.1 miles in 24 hours.

The event is raising money for several local charities.

The team will be aiming to scale the equivalent of the Empire State building every 58 minutes for 24 hours - or to put it another way, they'll be climbing from the distance of the Point of Ayre to the Calf of Man and back!

All 10 have been training for the last three months on a tower constructed at the old Prison on Victoria Road.

During their attempt, which gets underway at 3pm today (Friday), they will scale a 15 metre ladder and slide back down a metal pole.

The event is raising money for five local charities: Children's hospice Rebecca House; Help for Heroes; The Hyperbaric Chamber; Pumps for Kids and Craig's Heartstrong Foundation.
