A driver's been taken to hospital with serious injuries after an accident on Ballafletcher Road in Douglas.

Fire crews used cutting gear to free the man who was trapped in his Daihatsu 4 wheel drive car, after it hit a Ford Focus at just before nine this morning.

A plan to lift the casualty out through the roof was abandoned on the advice of paradmedics, and he was eventually removed from the wreckage through the rear door in a delicate operation lasting almost half an hour.

He was rushed to Noble's by ambulance, where his condition isn't yet known.

The driver of the other car isn't thought to be badly hurt.

Emergency services haven't released details about how the accident happened. .
