The Department of Infrastructure advises that major maintenance work will commence in Onchan on Monday 23rd July 2012. This will include upgrading of the traffic signals, footway reconstruction and carriageway refurbishment works. As well as replacing the worn out carriageway, a major benefit of this scheme is that the new modern signal installation will improve traffic flow particularly when the Mountain Road is closed.
The work will be carried out in phases. The first 4 week phase will require a road closure of Avondale Road between Stoney Road and Main Road, Onchan. During this period access to and from businesses will be maintained, as will pedestrian access to all properties. A signed diversion will be in operation for traffic travelling to the village shopping centres, with all local businesses open as usual. Buses will operate with a revised route along Bemahague Road.
Following this first phase, the works will be suspended for the Manx Grand Prix period and phase 2 will commence on Monday 3rd September. Due to the narrowness of the Main Rd, it will be necessary to close the road between Avondale Rd and Summerhill Rd for 5 weeks. During this period, through traffic will be diverted via King Edward Rd and local traffic along Avondale Rd.
Subsequent phases will continue under temporary traffic lights allowing traffic to flow in each direction. There will be some short night time closures to complete the final road surfacing towards the end of the project.
It is planned to have the overall scheme completed by mid-December 2012.
The Department will issue further information as the works progress.
The Department would like to thank Members of the public and businesses in advance for their patience and co-operation. If you have any concerns or queries regarding the work, please phone 850000.
