Little did Jan Hewitt, the owner of the new exclusive fashion boutique in Laxey which opened in late March 2012, know that deciding to stock the UK brand ‘Mudd & Water’ would be so apt.
Jan arrived at her boutique on Saturday 23rd June 2012 to find the floor covered in large puddles of mud and water. Overnight the shop had been flooded due to the high levels of rain which had fallen on the island. There was so much water it was running out the front door. Thankfully no stock was damaged as it was all either on hanging rails or shelves. The shop itself, and the hand built display units, didn’t get off so lightly though and Jan realised straight away that she needed to act immediately to protect the stock and ensure she could keep providing her customers with the service and style they wanted. So action stations began.
Thanks to the generous help of local business man Trevor Skillicorn, Jan was able to arrange the use of the old butcher’s shop next to the Co-op in Laxey and after a massive effort from Jan, and the joiners who had previously built the display units, Jan was able to open in her new ‘home’ on Saturday 30th June 2012.
There is still work to be done in the store over the next couple of weeks to make sure it is as fabulous as the last one was and Jan remains as committed as ever to providing all customers with the unique blend of style and sophistication that Beyond Brooke is becoming well known for.
And what of the actual Mudd & Water clothes – well they arrived in on the same day as the flood and they are already available in the new Beyond Brooke store, along with the rest of the collection of exclusive European and US brands never before available on the island.
Jan said ‘Given what happened with Mudd & Water I am now looking for a brand which will bring the island sunshine and cloudless skies!!’
