Conflict as Tynwald asked to accept Whitley Council changes

by isleofman.com 10th July 2012

There's a total of 33 questions for oral answer in this morning's sitting of Tynwald (Tues)

The Pinewood Studio debate comes under scrutiny once again with a raft of questions from MHKs Peter Karran and Kate Beecroft and there are also two questions regarding the TT from Ramsey MHK Leonard Singer.

Michael MHK Alf Cannan will ask the court to accept a change to the constitution of the Whitley Council, the body which negotiates pay and conditions for manual workers. This removes casual workers from the council's remit.

Mr Cannan will ask the court to accept the measure which he claims will underline "positive changes being brought in by the government"

But Eric Holmes from the Employees side of the council says Mr Cannan has made it his political aim to "sort the unions out" with regards to terms and conditions and he claims they didn't have all the information on the deal

Head of the Union Unite, Steve Salter, says he believes Mr Cannan could have been misinformed by the personnel office and casual workers CAN have implied contracts

Tynwald sits at 10.30 with full coverage on AM 1368
