The Island's Bishop Robert Paterson will continue to debate proposals for the ordination of women bishops at the Church of England General Synod in York today (Monday).
Synod had reached a compromise on allowing women to be ordained bishops, while providing for male oversight in traditionalist parishes, under an agreed code of practice.
But those opposed to women's ordination have secured an amendment, effectively giving those parishes an opt-out.
Now campaigners for women bishops are lobbying for the entire vote to be adjourned.
That would mean the concession fails and a vote on the bigger issue put back, possibly by years.
Speaking before he left the Island for York, Bishop Robert expressed his sadness that a fair compromise could be lost:
