Low turnout in Douglas by election

by isleofman.com 21st June 2012

Businesswoman Karen Angela has won the Douglas Borough Council by election.

But turnout in Athol Ward was low: just 10.3 per cent of registered voters went to the polls.

That compares to a 15 per cent turnout in the ward at the local authority elections in April.

Ms Angela polled 102 votes, four votes ahead of second-placed George Campbell.
Former mayor Michael Gelling polled 95 votes, Kevin Oliphant Smith 63, and another former mayor, veteran councillor Inkerman Faragher bottom of the poll, with 37 votes.

The seat was left vacant following the death of councillor Doreen Kinrade last month.
