Smugglers’ Secrets, Stories and Surprises!

by isleofman.com 13th June 2012

Set sail to ‘Smugglers’ Day’ at the Nautical Museum on Father’s Day Sunday 17 June, for a day made for Dads! Learn the secrets of smugglers and bootleggers with tales, trails and games that will surprise all the family.

Sitting on Castletown harbour, the fascinating Nautical Museum is most famous for housing the world’s oldest yacht ‘The Peggy’, owned by the enigmatic George Quayle – politician, banker and alleged smuggler! Visitors can enjoy a talk in his Cabin Room and seek out the secret trapped doors; hear tales of ‘The Peggy’ and why she remained undisturbed in her boathouse for 100 years; then discover the tools of the trade in the Sailmaker’s Loft – a treasure trove of maritime artefacts, including the mighty telescope belonging to Mr Quayle himself.

Down the road at the Old Grammar School children and grown-ups can enrol in ‘Smugglers School’ to discover the tricks of the trade of smugglers from the 17th century! Hear stories of the most famous Manx smugglers and practice and perfect a bowline knot.

Back at the Nautical Museum, see if you can complete the ‘Smugglers Quest’ to receive a reward. Sing-along to sea shanties, hear a Manx Folk Tale and listen to live Manx maritime music, where you can discover the story behind ‘The Smuggler’s Lullaby’.

Smugglers’ Day is standard admission and great value for season pass holders, ACE cardholders and Friends members who get free entry! Smuggler’s in costume also go free! There’s also the chance to treat dad to a Father’s Day gift, including Rum and Raisin Fudge and Beer Soaps.
