Next stage of Airport baggage project reached

by isleofman.com 12th June 2012

Work is continuing well on the outbound baggage replacement X-ray and baggage conveyor scheme at Ronaldsway.  However, next week sees the start of works which will interface with the old conveyor system at the check-in desks and may affect some passengers whilst checking-in hold luggage.

Work began at the beginning of April on the capital scheme to replace the ‘back of house’ baggage conveyor system and X-ray machines. Most of the conveyor system has since been removed and the new structure to house the baggage make-up area can now be easily seen from the Departures Lounge.

With effect from next week, 11th June, some of the old conveyor system which is linked to the check-in desks will be taken out. This will mean that whilst all the check-in desks will remain open for passengers to check-in and get their boarding cards, at half of the check-in desks passengers will be asked to take and drop off their weighed and tagged suitcases to another desk. In about a fortnight’s time, this will then affect all of the check-in desks for a short period. This particular work should be completed in early July and will not affect those passengers with hand luggage only.

Ann Reynolds, Airport Director, said “The project is progressing well and is on programme to be operational for the deadline of 1 September 2012. Whilst most of the work done so far is behind the scenes, affecting airport staff only, there will be times during the next few weeks when some passengers may be asked to drop their bags elsewhere on the ground floor of the Terminal, before proceeding to the Departures Lounge. Naturally we will try to keep any disruption to a minimum”. Ann added “My thanks go to all the airport staff who have worked patiently and tirelessly during some of the previous difficult and noisy stages of the project.”

The Department would like to thank passengers in advance for their patience and co-operation whilst these works to the conveyor system take place.
