It’s Magic at The Institute

by isleofman.com 31st May 2012

The Young Magicians of Mann continue their very popular ‘It’s Magic!’ show tour with a performance at The Institute in Laxey on Friday 15th. June, starting at 7pm. Organised by Paul Martin, Lexi Watterson and Mike Clague, the show has already been very well received at Rushen, Peel Clothworkers’, Cronk y Berry and Michael Schools. Mike explained “The Young Magicians of Mann were formed 25 years ago, following requests from young people who attended a magic workshop at the Youth Service’s Youth Festival. We stage an annual magic show at the Youth Arts Centre in Douglas before Easter, and decided to celebrate our silver anniversary by taking a slightly shorter version of the show to other parts of the Island.”

Lexi explained “The feedback to the shows from people attending has been fantastic. They tell us that the show is great fun for adults as well as children. We’re very pleased about that, as we wanted to stage a show for all the family. Tickets for our show at The Institute are available from Laxey Chemist, and cost £4. We’ve never performed at The Institute before, but it’s a wonderful community performance space and we’re really looking forward to it. The featured performers on this occasion are Sarina Dove, Andrew Martin, Chris Corlett, Daniel Quayle, Philip Morrison and Thomas Clague.“

Mike added “In this show we will be using new tables which have been specially designed for magic acts. They arrived recently from Germany, and are brilliant. We were able to purchase them through support given by the Isle of Man Arts Council, and we’re really grateful for their assistance. The Magicians of Mann, a separate club for adults, are also supported by the Arts Council, who provide underwriting for a number of visiting lecturers to come over and deliver magic education and workshops. They are open to all local magicians, and so the Young Magicians of Mann are able to attend. It’s really important for us to learn from the experience and expertise of some of the best magicians around. Previous lecturers have included Wayne Dobson, Alan Shaxon, Geoffrey Durham, Raphael Benatar and John Archer. John appeared on the great TV show ‘Penn & Teller – Fool Us!’ last year, and fooled them!”

Celebrations for the magic club’s silver anniversary will continue with a performance of It’s Magic! at Scoill Ree Gorree on 22nd June, and a very special show at the Gaiety Theatre on Friday 14th September. The Gaiety Show, called ‘Magic!‘ will include acts by adult magicians Chris Burns and Colin Boardman as well as guest appearances by ex-members. The show will also feature 10 fantastic illusions along with dance and music. Tickets for Magic! are now on sale from the Welcome Centre at the Sea Terminal, online at villagaiety.com or by calling 600555. They cost £14, with concessions at £8. Family tickets are available at a reduced price.
