Health director explains super bug rise

The Island's public health chief says over use of anti-biotics is partly responsible for cases of MRSA in hospital.

The number of patients contracting the super bug at Noble's has held steady in the past three years, and there were fewer cases of C-difficile in 2011 than the previous year.

But levels of infection by both bugs among patients treated at hospital and in the community, have risen over the past five years.

Dr Parameswaran Kishore says more cases than ever before are detected through patient screening.

Others are the result of bacteria becoming increasingly resistant to anti biotics.
