A Zulu Wars talk held on 15th May at the Manx Museum has generated over £2800 in fundraising for Hospice Isle of Man.
Organised by Standard Bank as part of its 150th anniversary celebrations, the talk attracted 165 guests and proceeds from the ticket sales and a raffle will assist Hospice Isle of Man in its provision of specialist care for cancer patients and their families.
During the event, Zulu wars lecturer and expert, Rob Caskie offered a vivid insight into the bravery of the Zulu army that defeated the British Army at the Battle of Isandlwana and also that of the 139 British soldiers who successfully defended Rorke’s Drift from 4,000 attacking Zulu warriors.
John Coyle, CEO of Standard Bank Isle of Man, commented on the success of the event: “Through bringing Rob to the island to share his tales of the Zulu Wars we were able to celebrate our links with Africa and at the same time raise vital funds for Hospice Isle of Man. This was a unique opportunity for our clients to join us and other guests to experience the heat of the battle and the emotion of those involved. The evening really was as exciting as it was educational.”
Mike Bathgate of Hospice Isle of Man was delighted and very grateful to all who were involved: “We were so lucky to have Rob Caskie here with us to talk about the fascinating history of the Zulu Wars and to share his expertise with us. The event was thoroughly enjoyed by all and we are very grateful for the significant donation it has generated. I would like to thank Standard Bank for all their support in organising this wonderful event.”
