Mobile phone bills set to fall

Call charges from mobile phones look set to come down in the Isle of Man.

The Communications Commission has just completed a review of the mobile phone market.

It's concluded Mobile Termination Rates or MTRs - the charges levied for making calls from one network to another - are substantially higher here than in the UK and much of Europe.

The UK average MTR rate is 4 pence per minute compared to 7.44 pence in the Island currently.

In some EU countries regulation has brought the rate down to just 1 pence per minute.

A consultation's begun today and the Island's two providers Manx Telecom and Cable & Wireless trading as Sure, will be expected to comply with a final direction on costs from the Commission.

Director Dr Carmel McLaughlin says lower charges for mobile phone users are on the horizon:
