Thanks to the generosity of ITManx, an Isle of Man based IT services, support and supply company, the Autism Initiatives facility at Nunnery Howe now has a complete computer suite to aid both the staff and users of the centre.
ITManx acquired nine computer systems for Autism Initiatives and installed these into a dedicated room at Nunnery Howe. They also installed all the required software, set up an internal network and connected the suite to the Internet.
David Millward, Director of ITManx, also volunteered many hours over a 3 month period, providing tailored training and support to facility users and staff members.
David comments:
“The computer suite has provided a valuable asset to the facility and one which we are very proud of and I hope it will get good use.”
What is Autism?
Autism is a developmental disorder that appears in the first 3 years of life, and affects the brain’s normal development of social and communication skills. Autism is a lifelong condition and as yet there is no cure. However, children and adults with autism can and do continue to learn throughout their lives. A formal diagnosis of autism spectrum condition (ASC) is given following medical assessment. A person with autism will usually have some difficulty or difference in the areas of communication, social interaction, thinking and imagination and in sensitivity of the senses.
However, in the way in which autism impacts on each individual is unique. The exact causes of autism are still unknown but it is likely that there are several factors affecting brain development that result in the differences of autism. There may be some genetic links, meaning that more than one person in a family may be affected by autism and it does have a tendency to be more common in males than in females.
Current research suggests that over 1 in 100 people may be on the autism spectrum.
Chrissie Holdaway, Resource Manager for Autism Initiatives, stated that the new computer suite has gone a long way to improving the lives of the users. It has provided a new dimension to our workshops, allowing staff to tailor sessions to the specific needs of the users which is already having fantastic results!
The availability of the Internet opens up a whole new world to the users, who can now access websites specifically designed to improve their learning and communication skills.
The computer suite also provides a specific area where employees of Autism Initiatives can access the latest training material to enhance their knowledge and improve the overall quality of day-to-day care for the users.
Autism Initiatives rely upon the generosity of the public to provide a unique approach to individuals with Autism. Sue Murphy – Head of Fundraising and Media says:
“One thing is quite clear to us - we simply could not achieve all that we do without the thoughtfulness and generosity of our supporters for which we are immensely grateful.”
Autism Initiatives are always looking to develop new ideas and ways of learning and ITManx have made a valuable contribution, appreciated by all involved.
Autism Initiatives provides a range of person centred services throughout the UK. The charity provides services to children and adults, and encompasses education, residential houses, supported living and outreach services.
