New legislation is being proposed to enhance the Isle of Man Constabulary’s ability to meet the challenges facing a modern police force.
The intention is to strengthen certain police powers that support efforts to combat serious organised crime, and further improve the Island’s international reputation as a co-operative nation in the fight against cross-border criminal activity.
The proposals are also designed to update police regulations and codes of practice governing the conduct and effectiveness of local officers.
Residents are being invited to submit their views about the draft Criminal Justice, Police Powers and Other Amendments Bill 2012 during a 10-week public consultation which started on Monday, May 14.
Minister Juan Watterson MHK said: ‘The Isle of Man Constabulary has been very successful in driving down crime figures in recent years. My Department is focused on maintaining the security of local communities and ensuring the Island is a safe place to live, work and visit. This draft legislation is aimed at ensuring the police have the more modern powers necessary to deal with evolving demands in an increasingly global context. ‘I would welcome feedback from the public about the proposals and would encourage people to take part in the consultation process.’
He added: ‘In addition to the general consultation, I will be asking the Police Consultative Forum to set up public meetings so that people can ask questions about the Bill and express their views in person.’
The consultation can be accessed on the Government website at www.gov.im/dha/consultations.gov.
The consultation will close on Tuesday 24th July 2012.
