Tynwald President issues voting absention warning

The President of Tynwald has expressed strong disapproval of members who leave the court to avoid voting on controversial issues.

At the start of today's sitting Clare Christian said voting on matters brought to the national parliament was an 'essential duty' and not to do so was a serious breach of standing orders.

Although no one was named, her comments are in response to the actions of MHKs Zac Hall and John Houghton, who left the chamber before a vote on the future of pre-schools last month.

They hadn't been granted leave of absence.

Madam President reminded all members they have to demonstrate to her, sufficient cause for absence:
