The Manx marine environment is a very valuable resource for the Isle of Man. Through fishing, tourism, leisure and many other uses, the sea contributes to our economy and maintains our quality of life.
We have a responsibility to look after the sea for our own benefit and for the benefit of future generations. By taking a few simple steps, everyone can contribute to healthy seas and shores:
1. Don’t Let Go – don’t organise balloon or magic lantern releases. They may look pretty in the air but they soon become litter on land and in the sea. The associated ribbons, wire and string can entangle birds, seals and porpoises and even choke sea turtles. Please find an alternative way to celebrate a special event.
2. Think Before You Flush – don’t put plastic or other non-biodegradable items down the toilet. Cotton buds, sanitary items, “disposable” wipes and other bathroom waste are not easily biodegradable and can remain in the marine environment for decades. This waste accumulates on beaches and builds up in the sea. Anything that doesn’t have to be flushed down the toilet should be put in the bin. The IRIS scheme has made big improvements to sewage treatment in the Isle of Man and has helped to clean up our beaches but it is still important to reduce this sort of pollution.
3. Bag It and Bin It – when dog walking on the beach, pick up after your dog and dispose of waste properly. Dog excrement on beaches is another human impact which can easily be avoided, keeping beaches clean and ensuring a better place for people and for marine life.
Minister Phil Gawne said:
“We are lucky to be surrounded by such rich and diverse marine life. There are many threats to our wonderful marine environment but some of these are easily avoidable. By following these simple steps, everyone can play their part in looking after the Isle of Man’s coast and sea.”
