'Panther' heading to Sierra Leone

A patrol boat no longer needed by the Island's customs and excise officers is to start a new role on the west African coast.

The 'Panther' is being donated to the government of Sierra Leone to help the impoverished country police its fishing waters.

It's part of a multi-national project supported by the World Bank, which will fund a major refit of the Panther.

Two marine engineers from the Isle of Man will travel with the vessel to Sierra Leone to offer maintenance training.

The boat is surplus to requirements after Treasury and the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture began a new joint approach to enforcing maritime law.
