Eight students from the Isle of Man College will showcase their artwork in an exciting, multi-centre exhibition at the Sayle Gallery, Villa Marina Arcade and Strand Shopping Centre in Douglas on completion of their BA (Hon) Fine Art course (awarded in affiliation with Liverpool John Moores University). This is just the second graduating class since the course was set up in 2009.
The participating artists are:
Anne-Louise Clague
As an artist, Anne-Louise communicates emotional concepts as a vehicle for art therapy, discussion and expression. Her sensitivity to mixed media demonstrates the power of healing through art.
Colette Gambell
Winner of the 2001 Singer & Friedlander Overall Art Prize, Colette sculpturally explores the fragility of material as a metaphor for human empathy. Her installations exploit darkness and light to create an emotive landscape within which viewers are invited to resonate with their own personal experience.
Benjamin Hickey
Isle of Man Artist Benjamin Hickey has a talent for capturing images and voices through the lens. His grasp of social documentary photography considers the importance of the ageing local community, exploring personal anecdotes to be held in a timeless digital footprint
Manos Kalamenios
Greek Artist and designer Manos Kalamenios, winner of Nobles Art Award 2007, draws inspiration from personal experience and memories of Greece to convey his inquisitive nature through ceramics.
Matt Owen
Founder member of the Isle of Man Creative Network, Matt Owen has worked closely with the Isle of Man Adoption Society, is involved in the Island’s regeneration project and is passionate about creating community links. A skilled draughtsman, Matt’s professional background in theatre, television and film has been successfully translated into fine art.
Juliet Petrarulo
Hailed a ‘most visionary painter’ Juliet Petrarulo discusses childhood memories in a visual context. Her imaginative perception is fluidly realised through her colourful semi-abstract depiction of emotive expression.
Shelby Sandyford-Sykes
Winner of the Archibald Knox Award 2011. The string theory has provided the concept for her creative exploration of metal and printmaking. Shelby sculpturally responds to the dimensional enormity of quantum mechanics.
Sharon Watterson
Sharon celebrates the beautiful effects of light, colour and atmosphere she experiences on a daily basis. Her seascapes transcend the boundaries of mere paint on canvas and invite us to consider our feelings associated with place.
