Bright ideas for dark skies

by isleofman.com 1st May 2012

Tourism chiefs are setting their sights on developing the Isle of Man as a Mecca for astronomers.

As part of a three year plan to diversify tourism opportunities, the aim is to make the Island a 'Dark Sky Astronomy Destination'.

To achieve that status there must be large areas unaffected by light pollution.... the Island boasts several beauty spots including Niarbyl and Snaefell which are already hots spots for star gazers.

The North West Coordinator for the Dark Skies Discovery Initiative Alan Brown is coming to the Island this week to speak to accommodation providers over here about what's involved.

The talk this Saturday is at the Manx Museum from 10am to midday, admission is free. Email enquiries@mnh.gov.im to register your place.

MNH Public Services Manager Howard Parkin hopes as many people as possible from the tourism industry will go along.
