Local authorities must do more, says chief minister

If local authorities are to have any relevance in the future they must have a more meaningful role in the community.

Chief Minister Allan Bell says that's the general consensus he's picked up on so far, adding there are questions in some areas as to whether they have such a role currently.

At Thursday night's general election sixteen contests took place in 12 local authorities.

Turnouts were generally 30-40%, but were as low as 15% and 16% in two Douglas wards.

Mr Bell thinks that will be taken into account when the issue is looked into by the Department of Infrastructure:
